High Point State Park: New Jersey’s Summit of Scenic Beauty
Perched atop the Kittatinny Ridge in Sussex County, High Point State Park is home to the highest elevation in New Jersey—an impressive 1,803 feet above sea level. With panoramic views stretching across three states, this 15,000-acre park is a haven for hikers, campers, nature lovers, and anyone seeking a peaceful escape into the mountains.
A Monumental View
The park’s most iconic feature is the High Point Monument, a 220-foot granite obelisk dedicated to New Jersey’s veterans. Visitors can climb to the top (seasonally) for breathtaking views of the Pocono Mountains, Catskills, and the Delaware River Valley. It’s especially stunning during fall foliage season or at sunset when the landscape glows with color.
Outdoor Adventures
High Point offers more than 50 miles of trails, ranging from easy nature walks to challenging hikes along the Appalachian Trail, which cuts through the park. Popular routes include the Cedar Swamp Trail, Monument Trail, and Iris Trail, each offering unique terrain and scenic overlooks.
In warmer months, families flock to Lake Marcia, a spring-fed mountain lake with a beach, bathhouse, and lifeguard-supervised swimming from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Fishing, boating (electric motors only), and picnicking are also popular at Sawmill Lake and Steenykill Lake.
During winter, the park transforms into a snowy playground with cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, ice fishing, and ice skating.
Camping and Wildlife
High Point features tent campsites, group camping areas, and rustic cabins near Sawmill Lake. Wildlife is abundant—keep an eye out for deer, foxes, and migratory birds. The park’s diverse habitats make it a favorite for birdwatchers and nature photographers.
