Weitzman National Museum of American Jewish History

Exploring the Weitzman National Museum of American Jewish History in Philadelphia

Located in the heart of Philadelphia’s Historic District, the Weitzman National Museum of American Jewish History offers a powerful and engaging journey through more than 360 years of Jewish life in America. Rising five stories above Independence Mall, this museum is a must-visit for anyone interested in immigration, identity, and the evolving story of American democracy.

A Museum of Stories and Legacy

Founded during the 1976 Bicentennial celebration, the museum began with just 40 objects and has grown to house over 30,000 artifacts, including personal items, documents, photographs, and interactive media. The exhibits trace how Jewish immigrants became Jewish Americans, highlighting their contributions to culture, politics, science, and civil rights.

Visitors can explore iconic artifacts such as Albert Einstein’s pipe, Irving Berlin’s piano, and Steven Spielberg’s first camera, all part of the museum’s “Only in America® Gallery/Hall of Fame.” This clever installation also features the now-famous “YO/OY” sculpture—depending on your angle, it reads as either a Philly greeting or a classic Yiddish exclamation.
